Rocky Mountain Relocation
I am looking to the future but thinking of the past. That pretty much sums up my current state of mind. Come August I will leave South Africa for foreign climes. I will sleep under strange stars in a mountain town without the cries of hadedas. I will have trouble crossing the street, being so used to cars keeping on the left. I will experience snow. I will celebrate public holidays I didn't know existed and familiar ones in the wrong season. I will write complicated letters to family and friends. I will subsist on fast food. I will take long walks in the countryside. I will have an accent different to that of people I meet. I will spend a lot of time in the lab. I will live frugally, so that I can afford to travel. I will go to concerts. I will refuse to drink beer using a funnel. I will watch ice hockey and baseball games. I will worry about my family. I will live on my own for the first time in my life. I will not lose my identity.

Dude, thats awesome news :) While there are many anxieties and fears by design for a change of such magnitude, they will far be outweighed by all the new opportunities and experiences you will have.
I wish you the best of luck with it. I hope you will continue to blog about them because I will always be curious about your progress and general well being :)(and i will stop there before I sound any more like an Alanis Morisette song :P )
Aww, gee, thanks, triggermap! I will try my best to keep this blog up to date with delicious tidbits on how I'm getting on in Fort Collins. Think I've found a pretty cool apartment today - just a petty that I'm gonna have to slum it up with my meagre budget. What kind of stores sell budget furniture in the States? I've heard that affluent people put their old furniture out on their front lawns this time of year. Is that true, or just a rumour?
And by petty I mean pity, obviously. *sigh*
It's been a while! Sounds good. I am not so sure that I would have the courage to do what you are just about to ... change is good.
good luck, eoh!
take many photies and post them!
will you be returning to the native land any time soon?
I'm all for photos if and when Blogger plays along. And part of my scholarship agreement is that I come back to South Africa and share the expertise I gain abroad.
Welcome to the U.S.!
You will love Colorado.
At least I hope and think you will.
Hey, is Boots and Bones ok?
I have checked her blog everyday for months-no news. Did she quit?
Fort Collins is a really cool place and Colorado State is a great school. You'll have fun.
I used to go out there recruiting - sadly haven't been there for a few years now.
As far as I know, Wendy has just finished a pretty intricate funding application. I hope we'll hear from hear soon. I'm getting antsy for a Boots 'n Bones fix myself.
I hope it's gonna be fun. At least I'll have some money; it would've been a different story had I been on the run from the Green Card people, like friends of friends of friends I've heard of...
